Suena a novela cyberpunk pero esto es el Mundo Real (TM) (con la habitación esa enorme de techo azul que los demás niños llaman “calle”.) Lo leo en Boing Boing: Deaf hacker rewrites implant-firmware so he can enjoy music again, en un artículo de Cory Doctorow, que ahora es blogger y escritor a tiempo completo:
A deaf geek diligently tinkered with the firmware on his cochlear implant, trying to get it to faithfully render out Ravel’s composition, Boléro, eventually meeting with success. Michael Chorost was born with partial hearing, and at 15, he discovered that Boléro was audible to him, and it became a touchstone for him, a piece of music that he developed a deep emotional attachment to. In 2001, Chorost experienced the sudden, total loss of the remains of his hearing, and Boléro was lost to him, seemingly forever.
Realmente no fue el geek propiamente dicho el que trasteó con el software de su implante, sino varios técnicos que simpatizaron con su causa. De todas formas sigue siendo un relato que merece la pena leer. El artículo completo, en Wired.
